Medium nib, Vacumatic fill system.
This rare Parker Silver Pearl Vacumatic fountain pen was made for Parker in Denmark by the Christian Olsen Pen Company in Copenhagen using parts imported from Canada. They were the first distributors of Parker pens outside the U.S.A. The pen barrel bears the Olsen “anchor” logo with “C O” inside the surrounding ring – indicating an early model - and this example dates from around 1935. It is rare to find an Olsen barrel imprint. The Vacumatic was originally launched in the U.S.A. 1932 as the “Vacuum Filler”. It was advertised as holding 102% more ink than other pens available at the time. The barrel is used as the ink reservoir rather than an ink sac and this increases the ink capacity. Filled by a then new style vacuum pump mechanism on the barrel end, it was also advertised as “revolutionary in principle and perfectly marvellous in performance”. It became an accepted and reliable filling method that, in its later form, was used for the early Parker 51. This example has the early “lock down” filler. It was available in a number of colours including this, the Silver Pearl. It is a double jewel model meaning the cap crown and the barrel blind cap trim carry the same striped design as the cap and barrel. The trim was nickel or chrome. In this case I believe it is nickel. The cap carries the Parker arrow clip and three thin bands. Around the crown of the cap lip is the registration number imprint “784404”. The bold barrel imprint states “Parker Vacumatic” with the Olsen “anchor” logo underneath. The Parker two tone arrow nib states “Parker Vacumatic Reg.T.M. Made in Canada 3” which links with Olsen’s use of Canadian parts. The nib has a smooth medium point and is a slightly wet writer. I have listed it as in a fair to good condition. You will see from the montage that the cap rings have, in the main, lost their colour. The clip has signs of wear and the section has some minor marks. There is also the feint remains of personalization on the barrel which are visible using a loupe. Naturally it is priced accordingly. It is a good size vintage fountain pen measuring 127mm with cap on and 154mm with cap on barrel end. A Christian Olsen vacumatic is hard to find and this example, even in a fair to good condition, will sit well in a vintage fountain pen collection and will also serve as an everyday writer. All vintage fountain pens are professionally serviced and bench tested prior to offering for sale. A further inspection is carried out before despatch. Filling instructions will be sent with your order. A gift box is available free of charge on request at checkout where you are also able to select your payment method.
