Medium to slightly broad nib, Piston fill system.
This vintage fountain pen – the Pelikan 140 – was made in Germany around 1959. The 140 was introduced in 1952 and continued to be a popular model until 1963. It is easily identified by the green barrel with vertical black stripes and the solid black cap with its distinctive rolled gold Pelikan clip - designed to resemble a Pelikan’s beak. The text around the cap lip reads “PELIKAN 140 GERMANY”. The earlier models had an engraving on the barrel knob to indicate the width of the nib. This is not evident on this example however on test it writes with a medium to slightly broad nib. The nib text reads “Pelikan 14c 585” with a Pelikan logo in the centre. It is a piston filling pen so you turn the barrel knob to allow the ink to enter. It is a medium sized vintage fountain pen measuring 123mm with cap on and 139mm with cap on barrel end. Condition is good, with some surface scratches and brassing to the cap band and clip – this is common for this model and it lives up to Pelikan’s reputation for quality products. Whilst it is a light pen it has good balance and the 140 has been called “a rugged, everyday, take anywhere pen” so it is suitable for everyday use or to add to a vintage fountain pen collection.
